Problem with Sony X707ES CD Player . . . HELP!!

I had my X707ES CD player serviced.

The laser output was tested and found to be working well within normal parameters.

The sled was cleaned and lubed and now the laser moves freely along its path with no obstructions.

Problem is now a little different than before.

Now when I put a CD into the machine a number of things may happen:

Sometimes it will play from beginning to end with no skips, no stops, just beautiful music.

Other times, it refuses to play at all.

It will always read the TOC. Then sometimes if I press play it will play the disc, and sometimes it will not.

Occasionally after reading the TOC the disc will spin backwards at a very high rate of speed. When this happens and I press play, it simply would not play. If it stops spinning backwards on its own and I press play, it will usually play the disc.

Other times the disc will stop spinning after reading the TOC. And if I press play, it will play properly.

When the disc is playing and I press stop, sometimes it will stop spinning, and other times it will spin backwards, sometimes fast and other times slowly.

When the disc is spinning very fast backwards and I press eject, the tray opens with the disc still spinning in the tray.

Other times, the tray opens with the disc not spinning.

Assuming that the laser is working properly, what other sources of these problems could there be?

The symptoms seem to be an electrical glitch, as I've never heard of a CD player spinning a CD violently backwards when "stop" is pressed.

I really love the sound of my ES piece, and I would love to get it working right.

Any tecchies out there?

Cheers

The spinning fast and spinning backward are typical common symptoms that occur when the disc servo loses lock.

As to the cause... it could be an electrical re-alignment that is needed... or it could be a defective pickup.

I can't comment on the work/checks that have already been done but would be interested to know how the laser was checked. Sony pickups normally have a value of current (for the laser diode) incorporated in the pickup serial number (the last 3 digits) and have a resistor to measure volt drop across, and hence calculate current. It should agree closely, if it's high the diode has deteriorated and the auto power circuit has increased the current to compensate. Another check is the examination of the signal from the pickup... is the amplitude good, is it "clear and clean", is it jitter free etc, and very rarely, a check with an optical laser power meter.

So the causes can be many... mechanical, laser problems, electrical. Without having the unit on the bench to evaluate there is no way to guess... sorry :)

Update on X707ES

I have done a little more research and work since my last post, and here are the results.

The tech who serviced the unit did not properly clean off the old lube from the slide rails, as a bit of gunk was visible on opening the unit up.

I cleaned the gunk off and re-lubed with a light oil that is teflon based.

After a few attempts to play the unit started to work properly.

Seems it took a while for the new/clean lube to work itself over the rails evenly so that the sliding movement would be smooth.

It has been now just over 6 months and the player has not skipped a beat, playing any disc from beginning to end without issue.

I have now purchased a 707ESD CD player, which works perfectly as well.

The old Sony ES CD players, especially the "7" series units are magnificent units to behold and to listen to. Sonically, they are unrivaled. Can be had for cheap when the owner is unaware that the problem they are experiencing is usually a simple repair.

Belts and oil are relatively cheap, and the units are not.

Cheers

Are you one of the few lucky user's, where not that the laser unit has to be replaced - probably by only a few hours of use while the whole lifetime.
In most cases the laser diode SLD 104 is muddy, so must the entire laser unit "KSS-272A" to be replaced.
Currently here which are offered:
KSS-272A ²ð»ú¼¤¹âÍ· KSS-272A ͳ»õ¼¤¹âÍ· KSS-272A ²ð»ú¼¤¹â¶þ¼«¹Ü KSS-272AÏÂÏß¼¤¹âÍ·
Please note - the optical pick up's from Sony's KSS-Series are the ones with the shortest life time of all exist models, independend of the price class. I. e. - the life time of a KSS-272A isn't longer than that one of a KSS-210A or KSS-213C.

For anyone interested...I still have a service doc of the CDPX-77ES.
Anyone interested?
What means "Service Doc" ??
mean you a service documentation/service manual or mean you a service doc (service dock) as a service station/service center?
In last case you can make me certainly an offer for a KSS-280A optical pick up.
P.S. The URL

is death and even not to find about
