win xp loads a resolution that is higher than the one your panel supports. the minimum you can set the res to is 800x600 at 60hz, but you will need 640x480 at 60hz. I dont use xp anymore, so im not sure how to do it the easy way.
What video card do you have?

Actually, I just noticed that the nvidia settings program (system tray) in at least the latest version allows you to choose anything as low as 320x200. This is the first time I haven't forced the thing to stop loading as it makes it very easy to switch to 800x600/60hz for my projector at night.
Other than the quick setting change programs in video drivers, 3rd party programs may do the same. You can also just use Powerstrip to setup any setting you want although its more advanced than just clicking an icon and selecting a resolution.
