Hi all,
I have changed my mind yet again.🙄 . I have all of the parts to build a SE EL34 amp sitting in a box so I might as well go ahead and build it. I have thought about putting a choke into the supply but the only way to do this and preserve the asthetics of the amp is to mount it underneath the chassis plate. My top plate is 1/8" steel. It's overkill I know but I wanted the magnetic shielding that steel provides. If I mount a choke underneath the chassis I'm afraid that all of that shielding will be for nothing. The choke would be at tight angles to the power transformer but would be parrallel to the output transformers that are mounted on top. Would the steel top plate provide enough magnetic shielding to make this a moot point? Also, what would the effect of the choke be on any signal wiring under the chassis? Is there a "safe" distance from the choke where it would not much matter? Thanks.
Gavin

Choke underneath chassis
Hi G,
I wouldn't think it would cause much problem.
Take care and hope it warms up soon.

Hi Steve,
It should work out OK. I think I know how to mount the choke to minimize any problems. I think the gain will outweigh the loss (if any). It should turn out nice. Magnequest output transformers. They should sound much better than the cheap ones you heard in my little EL84 amp. Plus I will have about 175% of the wattage available woo! hoo!. A whole 5 watts! I won't know what to do with myself. I'll post pics when it is done.

Break out the Champaign Gavin. We are talking some serious power here. 😀
Hope all goes well Gavin. If you get a chance, can you fill us in on how it sounds?
Take care buddy.
