To Bill Fitzpatrick, Sreten and Svante......thanks for the advice in my last thread regarding my over correction of the bass speakers excursion in the Pro 13 Audax kit.
I ended up using three caps in parallel for a total of 800uF and it worked a treat! It has them back sounding as they did originally without the 'clapping out' on energetic bass passages. I'm pleased with the result because for bookshelf speakers, these Pro 13's sound good at low volume levels with a well defined bass for such small enclosures.
Anyhow, thanks again you blokes!
Cheers

I did the work on the Pro 13s at my mates place yesterday afternoon and I honestly don't know what amp he was using, apart from it being an integrated unit that he tells me is around 80 watts rms.
The past two years I've used the ME 550 Hi Cap power amp and an ME 14 pre amp. The ME 14 has no tone controls so I couldn't have adjusted the bass level wiith it even if I'd wanted to. My mate was certainly using the tone controls on his amp though!
ME unfortunatley went out of business last year after over 30 years building amplifiers. I enjoyed dealing with them because they were a small company and all my contacts were answered promptly and in person by the owner, designer and manufacturer himself. I hope we see Peter Stein back building amplifiers in Australia soon.

Thanks again for your help.

Glad things turned out to your satifaction.
I presume you didn't retune the ports, and this is
the best way of dealing with a tone control fiend.
Adding the capacitors with everything else flat will
result in an overdamped bass alignment. If bass
boost is to be applied this is fine in my book.

Hi Sreten,
That's correct, I didn't fiddle with the port because the addition of the caps was an easier option to try first. Using my mate's amp yesterday with the tone controls flat, the Pro 13s sounded very good indeed with a slight boost or colouration in the bass notes. The 250uf cap in series simply restricted the bass driver way too much!
I built these speakers around September last year and I use them only as part of a second system for party music or if we want music outside. I wasn't using them at all and that's why I loaned them to my mate and probably wouldn't have picked up on the problem if hadn't.
Thanks again for your help.
