Problem: intermittent optical digital signal dropout?

There's a signal dropout problem, and I believe it lives in my Kenwood VR-309. (That's one of those 'receiver' things.)

The audio signal seems to come and go when devices are hooked up to the optical input. The problem has occured with several devices using different TosLink cables - a DVD player, a portable mp3 player, and a satellite TV receiver. Which is why I suspect the Kenwood.

So, what is the likely culprit? DAC? Something simpler? Is there a known weak link in the chain, for consumer electronics in general or for my model in particular?

The component is past its warranty, so I'm thinking about a little surgery...

Thanks in advance,

/Andrew - in RCA land for now
