Proac/Seas woofer surround crack

I am not convinced by SEAS explanations... I am sure at least the xmax of the driver could be affected.
I have seen other rubbers in the automotive world become smaller, they look to be dried. I think in general, rubbers have less good quality. Perhaps for ecological reasons the process to make rubber is different and less good ?
If we have an expert in rubbers I would be very pleased to have an explanation ?
I have never seen very old rubber on very old drivers have cracking.

I got some good news, directly from SEAS: 😉

"Dear Johan,

This type of cracking has nothing to do with sunlight (ozone).

The reason for this is a chemical reaction between the magnesium cone, the glue, and the rubber.
We have seen it happen before, but do not fully understand the reason why it happens on a few drivers.

The good thing, is that this should not influence the acoustical properties of the driver. We have tested a similar driver, and no repair is needed. It’s just a cosmetically issue.

We believe that you still will have many, many years of the perfect listening experience. "

Hello, I will activate this thread. I am owning two Thor Evo 04 Speakers with four "Seas Excel W18E001" Drivers. Some days ago I recognized scraping noises from one Speaker. I looked very closely to the drivers and saw this (see Attachments). The Drivers are 9 years old. I am owning an 8 years old Center with the same drivers, too. And they have the same problem.

The drivers never stood in the sun and they had never been cleaned with anything.

I contacted the Seas distribution in Germany. Seas wrote them:

"This is something that we see from time to time. Rubber is a material with a limited lifetime even if not exposed to extreme conditions. These are 9 years old units and even with high quality materials used we can unfortunately not expect an 'endless' life time for the units."

In other words: The drivers are on the way to destroy themselfs after 9 years of using and Seas wrote, they see this "from time to time". That's the response from a premium manufacturer! They are so "nice" and offered me six new Drivers with 20 % off.

Here, in this thread, the user "JDeV" reported similar experience with the same drivers. He got this reaction from Seas:

"Dear Johan,

This type of cracking has nothing to do with sunlight (ozone).

The reason for this is a chemical reaction between the magnesium cone, the glue, and the rubber.

This is not true. I wrote above, that one of my drivers is making scraping noises since some days. After 9 years of using.

Some news: Today Seas offered six new drivers with 50 % off. That is much more better than 20 % and I will make the deal. Otherwise: The best were, my drivers had not had this problem.

Many thanks to "Intertechnik" in Germany. They managed the contact to Seas in Norway perfectly.
