I have a dCS 955 DAC that can take PCM upto 192/24 (using my Purcell upsampler) but also DSD in the professional SDIF-2 format: seperate left, right and clock signals.
So far, I can not use this, as I have no means of outputting DSD in this format. Would it be possible to modify an SACD player to output SDIF-2? I know it is officially not possible to prevent copying, but since you can get the raw datastream out of a lot of players (e.g. Allen Wright) one would only need a circuit to make SDIF-2 out of that...
Anyone have any info or suggestions?

Well, the thing is that I was able to get the units I have now cheap because I worked at dCS for my studies in mechanical engineering 
That is why I have the first ever 955, built from prototype stuff. Because I did not have AES and wanted upsampling, I purchased a 2nd hand Purcell. I would like a 972 but these are far less common ergo more expensive. I am happy with 192/24, but am wondering about DSD/SACD.
I have never heard a direct comparison between 954 and 955, but I expect them to be very simular. The main difference is in the big graphic display which includes metering.
If I ever want SACD I would need a DAC that has firewire (the proffesional models don't have it) and a unit that outputs it, so probably no way to do it other than if I could modify an SACD player to output SACD via SDIF-2.

Unfortunately dCS Verdi is not able to output DSD on SDIF-2.
EMM Lab DAC8 is able to convert DSD-optical into DSD-SDIF-2. So you could use Meitner's SACD Drive but it's quite an expensive solution.
