preferred resistor type

What is the preferred type of resistor to use? I can find the correct resistance and wattage in several different types (carbon comp., carbon film, metal oxide, etc.). For instance a 1 Meg on the input from a triodes grid to ground. Or the cathode bias resistor. Thanks.
 
I'm not a fan of carbon film or metal oxide in the signal path... Metal film, carbon comp and non-inductive wirewounds (plate load and high current cathode followers) can be used in the signal path.. More exotic types like tantalum and foil types can also be used if you have the budget.

Some sense of the specific application would allow recommendations targeted at the end use.
