What is the preferred type of resistor to use? I can find the correct resistance and wattage in several different types (carbon comp., carbon film, metal oxide, etc.). For instance a 1 Meg on the input from a triodes grid to ground. Or the cathode bias resistor. Thanks.
I'm not a fan of carbon film or metal oxide in the signal path... Metal film, carbon comp and non-inductive wirewounds (plate load and high current cathode followers) can be used in the signal path.. More exotic types like tantalum and foil types can also be used if you have the budget.
Some sense of the specific application would allow recommendations targeted at the end use.

The best resistors for preamps, I believe, PTMN -- they are non-inductive Russian military wirewound resistors. For the rest I prefer MLT or C2-23 resistors, metal film on ceramic, non-magnetic.

Specifically the resistors in this preamp circuit:
As Wavebourn states, but I think generic Dale, Vishay or other RN60 type metal film resistors would be fine too.
