Hey DIYA
Is there any MOSFET's in production today in TO220 packed that is particular popular as outputs in a preamp?
My knowledge of these is quite limited, but might try to design my own preamp in the near future.
My preamp now is Acurus LS11 modded to a state where I need to move forward towards something else. I found much inspiration from the Aragon lineup (28K and Aurum for example) with their enhanced MOSFET.
Regards

What do you want your preamp to do? How much gain, what input and output impedance, etc etc.
This is a ongoing thread where a lot of Mosfets are used in a line stage.

Am I missing something - why would you use a power device in a preamp? It doesn't need power, a preamp expects to see 10k or higher load.
I'm not at all a specialist in electronics. If I end up trying to build a preamp it would be pretty much like the Aragon 28K or similar. The Aragon uses massive outputs, and it's overkill. Nevertheless it's better then the JFET's in the cheaper Acurus I own now. It really could use some headroom for improvement.
I've looked at the IRF610/9610 and they really are used in quite some descent pre's..
I've bought the Wolverine EF3-4 poweramplifier boards (I build it with 10k input) here on DIYAudio and stating the build around Jan2024, then maby a new DIY preamp for my Living room afterwards.

The Aragon uses VN0106/VP0106's which are TO92 and low power (350mA, 55pF input capacitance), not TO220 power FETs.
You need lots of outputs !The Aragon uses VN0106/VP0106's which are TO92 and low power (350mA, 55pF input capacitance), not TO220 power FETs.
In that case what are they marked? Here's Aragon 28K; TO220's at Q7/Q8
Best regards
The IRF610 etc are complete overkill for a preamp, the VN/VP0106's are already more powerful than needed. Also the less gate charge the better for ease of driving - IRF610's might need driver devices(!)
Mabe the preamp has a headphone jack, and the power sized MOSFETs, if a bit of overkill, could be used to drive just about any dynamic headphone.Am I missing something - why would you use a power device in a preamp? It doesn't need power, a preamp expects to see 10k or higher load.
Very good point.
Whammy and ACP+ works great as preamps, yet can drive almost any headpnones.
I preffer BA3FA though.

Pass Aleph P used these (IRF610/9610), and it is a well respected preamp. I like my (commercial) one quite well.Am I missing something - why would you use a power device in a preamp? It doesn't need power, a preamp expects to see 10k or higher load.
FQP's are nice, if you can still get them, and they still match N to P.
2SK216 / 2SJ79 also, because of their low and linear capacitances.
🙂

I rest my case!!Pass Aleph P used these (IRF610/9610), and it is a well respected preamp. I like my (commercial) one quite well.
Hi Mark,
What is your case? I am not following. The IRF510/610 make great output devices and drive long interconnect easily. And I like the sound of them in a preamp as in Pass Aleph P.
