More and more, I am thinking about getting one of BrianGT's basic GC kit. I'd go with a simple stereo setup for now. Later on, I'd really like to get a hold of a nice surround processor and build myself 7 monoblock amps.
The one thing that I don't quite understand at this point is if I'd need to buy a preamp for the stereo setup. Right now, I only have a DVD player plugged in my old Sony receiver. Since I do not have any way to control the sound level with the DVD player, I guess I should try to control the sound level with a potentiometer. I have read quite a few threads in this forum and I am a bit puzzled because there seems to be so many ways of doing it.
What would be an easy and economical way of doing this ?
I'll be building this stereo kit in order to get the feel of how these things work. I don't intend on spending tons of money on this first kit for exotic parts but I want it to be fully functionnal as it will most probably be used by the kids once daddy build himself 7 nice monoblock amps.😀

I think what your asking is will a pot work, and the answer is for sure.
A preamp in it's simplest form really is just a volume control, and as such a pot fits the bill nicely.
There are some ways of hooking it up for fancy audio curve enhancement etc etc.
But that aside the easy way is signal goes in on one side, the ground connects to other side, signal out is in the middle. That line just gets dumped into your input on the chipamp.
*Was that what you were asking?*

I couldn't have said it better ! 🙂 English is not my mother tongue so sometimes I think it through in french and then translate it in english.

What components and values should I use. I have seen posts talking about Noble pot as well as others talking about stepped attenuators. As I said earlier, I don't want to break the bank on my first project so what should I use that will work correctly while being affordable ?
Are there any reputable Canadian suppliers for those pots/attenuators ?
Well i think generally an attenuator is just too expensive, unless you make one, or find some great deal on it.
There are a few members selling pots here on the selling/trading forum. You also have a pretty good place pretty near to you for pretty high end gear.

Of course there is always radio shack for the $5 version.
A 50K or 100K should work fine for your application.
