practical advice for beginner....

i have begun to embark on my first home speaker design project and i am trying to keep it as simple as possible, i would like practical feedback as to the current course i am planning, i want to build a pair of 2-way speakers using 5.5" woofers and a 1" tweeter in a sealed box and use a 1st order x-over. i want to use vifa 8 ohm PL drivers they seem well priced for my first project and i think will work well in small enclosures, i then want to add a seperate passive sub using a single PL 8" driver in a vented box with a 1st order x-over. i would use the natural roll off of the 2-ways as the high pass for the woofer and cross the sub at 90hz, now i quess my question; is this sounding like a good place to start and can i expect to get some decent sound from this config. i am using a box modeling program for the enclosures and then thought i could try several variations for the x-over until one sounded good. any advice or exp. (not too technical please) would be appreciated. my theory from what i have read is that if you use good drivers with a good, simple enclosure and a simple x-over decent results should be attainable to the novice.

p.s. i do have very good woodworking skills, if anyone would like to comment on a bandpass enclosure for the sub i would be interested.
