hello,
I have been searching all over the internet for answers. I came across this site and the forum that was about my exact problem. I have a Phonic Powerpod 740 Plus and I kept blowing fuses. I took it apart and I found that on the power circuit board (the one behind the power button, power cable plug in, voltage selector, etc) there was a fried varistor (the black disk) labeled NTCS1 on the circuit board. The varistor is next to the black plastic rectangle part which I don't really know what it is. I cannot seem to find the specs for this varistor. The varistor doesn't have a clear description on it only saying 'TL08' then below it '020'. Does anyone have a schematic I could use or possibly a datasheet for this varistor? Again I have a Phonic Powerpod 740 Plus. Either a schematic with a parts list, or a datasheet can be sent to basetheif8@yahoo.com it would be much appreciated.

I have not been able to obtain a schematic either and from what I've read it's practically impossible to get one. Phonic does not sell the schematic. Now about your varistor. It's actually a thermistor/inrush current limiter. Here is the data for this item. The replacement manufacturer is UPPERMOST and the P/N: 20SP010 and here is the link: http://www.beta.dk/sprogUK/index.html Now they are located on the other side of the world, so I believe the best U.S. equivalent would be the following from digikey.com: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=480-3174-ND Best of Luck

Has anyone got anywhere figuring out what the root of the problem is regarding the SMPS blowing up?

I've got one here which I repaired and then blew up again. The common factor in the two instances it blew up (when the customer had it and here on the bench) was that it blew up at power on and was powered up very soon after being switched off. I'm wondering if there is an issue regarding the start-up if the rails have not fully collapsed.

I'd like to find out what the design flaw is and attempt to correct it before I have a second attempt at fixing it.

contacting Phonic

My son has a Powerpod that has died. It powers up, and the level meters show that its getting input, but nothing comes out. It's still under warranty but I cant get ahold of anyone at Phonic to get an RMA number. I've tried e-mail, and these two phone numbers: 1-813-890-8872 and 1-800-890-6861. The phone numbers are busy all the time. For kicks I called the fax number in the users manual, it was busy too. Has anyone else had trouble contacting them? Does anyone have a different number, or email address?

Thanks

(the black disk) labeled NTCS1

Vateloco is right, the clue is in the marking, it's an NTC thermistor, not a varistor.

If its burnt, it's almost always a symptom of a larger fault on the power board, they rarely fail on their own. Simply replacing the NTC will usually result in it blowing again.

They are also known (here in the UK) as a Surgeguard and can be cross-referenced to many part numbers from many manufacturers such as Siemens Epcos, Rhopoint, Vishay and others.
