Powered speaker question

I'm looking for a small decent sounding single way or two way powered speaker that only has an aux input and volume control with no wireless connectivity of any kind, no battery and no remote control at a reasonable cost maybe around $100 or under.

I do not expect 20Hz bass, but I would like the bass response to be at least no more than -3dB down at 60Hz if not better than that.

Cabinet size should be no bigger than:

10" W
10" L
10" H

What single speaker would be recommended?

I can also install a pot in a box as a volume control if a recommended speaker does not have a built i control.

Well I may have found something in my stash.

Here's the specs of the woofer in the following open back box

12 1/4" H
10" W
7 1/2" D
5/16" thick

The box also has a 2" cone tweeter.

I did a test with an audio generator and I hear output at 60Hz.

So it looks like I may try a temporary crossover just to see how good the speaker sounds.

If it's good enough I'll get a chip amp kit from Qkits and have me a decent enough speaker for under $50.

At the moment if I need a pad, it will not need much of a pad. What I may do is put a 1 ohm resistor in series with the tweeter and see how that works.

If the balance sounds better then I'll calculate the 12dB/octave crossover adding the 1 ohm resistor to the tweeter impedance.

Here's the measurements of the whole speaker.

Without zobel.

With zobel. Calculator called for 6.7uF and 7.1 ohms. What I had 7.5 ohms and 6.2uF. Now the woofer was measured int he box itself so the numbers for it may not be 100% correct which would throw off the zobel.

May test just the woofer out of the box tomorrow afternoon.

Visaton B200, whoops, Sorry, I missed the $100 requirement.

Save a lot of money and get the Visaton BG20. Put it in a sealed box, really easy. There is room to put your amp in there, and it’s plenty loud too. https://www.parts-express.com/Visat...-Speaker-with-Whizzer-Cone-292-548?quantity=1

MarkAudio CHR120 might actually get you down to 60hz in a box of that size. Again, very simple and sounds really great. It’s right at $100, and you don’t have to buy the pink one. https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.c...io-chr-120-champagne-6-metal-cone-full-range/

There are far too many two way speakers fitting your description. We need to narrow the options down a bit. Could you tell us what it’s for, it’s intended use, then we could give you better recommendations.

The BG20 is good but the upper range isn't the most convincing. If you add a (super-) tweeter that's a punchy speaker. I think it wants a bigger box though, even sealed. Excellent price/performance.

A better fit would be the Sica LP165.38/426 TK ER / Sica Z004002 (yes, they got two model names) or the Sica Z004003, which is the 4 Ohm version. It fits in the dimensions even with BR. Huge VC, 38mm.

OP's constraints give 11 liters of net volume with a 15mm thick enclosure. How on earth would response down to 60Hz be difficult to satisfy with that? I have 2 liter enclosures playing down to 30Hz in room 😅

You can pick pretty much any cheap midwoofer/tweeter combo from a reputable manufacturer and fulfill your requirements so far

I remembered that I have a Boston Acoustics LCAI220 amplifier.

So I tried that with the speaker and it works well. Plus since I have another identical cabinet, if I can find another identical woofer (cannot remember if I bought two when I wanted to re-do these speakers several years ago), I can have a pair of stereo speakers.

I also decided to try a dome tweeter I had and it sounds better with the woofer.

Here's the completed crossover.
