Power rating & their meaning

Hi Gurus,

I want to build a speaker with the foll units:

Tweeter: D27TG-45-06 - 90db
Mid : P13WH-00-08 - 88db
Bass : 18W8535 - 88.5 db

The P13's are rated at 40W and the others are 100w. Just worried that the P13’s might be underpowered. Can someone explain if that is likely to happen ?

I like to listen to music a little loud. The T/Mid crossover will
be 4th L/R with an L-pad & the mid/bass cross will be an
active 4th order L/R. This would mean that none of the units are really
going to be operating much more than an octave above.

Will the 40W from the Vifa be enough ? I need the speaker to touch atleast 98-102 db because I have a large room (21 x 16).

I'll be using an "Audiolab 8000 C/P" with an additional "Cambridge audio P100" for the bass.

Cheers,
sunil

Hi Sunil

I dont think you need to worry too much, you are very unlikely to use the max power. I dont use too much power, have two amps with relatively low power ( 35 wpc and 55 wpc) for music and hardly need to use the max power..

Is your bass unit for a sub or is it a 3-way system?

BTW I live in Bangalore too!

George

I am glad that helped.

Regarding your wishes for dB's, let try add it up:

1 Watt = 88 dB
2 Watt = 88 dB + 3 dB = 91 dB
4 W = 91 + 3 = 94 dB (and so on......)
8W = 97 dB
16 W = 100 dB
32 W = 103 dB
64 W = 106 dB
128 W = 109 dB

Even with losses in crossovers etc. you should be able to
get app. 106 dB with no problem
