Power Amplifier capactitance

Hi All,

iam having an power amplifier Perreaux MC6100 all of its caps have gone bad which are of capacitance 6800uf 80v, my question is can i upgrade all the caps with 10000uf 80v elna audio grade capacitor of same size as iam unable to procure 6800uf 80v caps good Audio grade ones?

Using 10,000uF smoothing caps instead of 6800uF will cause more current to flow through the diode bridge, on switch-on. You need to make certain the diodes used in the amp ... can handle the additional current.
 
Switching to 100 v 6800 caps may be more accessible than 80 v caps. Then you would not have to install surge limiter ahead of your rectifier. Such as a negative temperature coefficient resistor as GE CL-11 or CL-101.
Instead of ebay or a small local shop I would use an authorized distributor as RS, Farnell, or Reichelt. Let them handle getting a package through customs. I find long service life (>3000 hours) capacitors from Panasonic, Nichicon, Rubicon, Vishay, and Kemet to be capable and last longer than the ones I had to replace 4 times in 40 years in one power amp. The short life ones came from the front shelf of a local TV parts store.
The brands I listed have supplied me with caps not made in the land of counterfeits and falsified QA paperwork.

As long as there is a real rectifier in there and not something that just squeaks by. 100V caps are however, easier to source, as the “in between” voltages of 44, 56 and 80V are not always stocked in every line, and likely more expensive in onesey twoseys than the standard 50, 63 and 100V ones. 100V caps would be capable of more ripple current than 80V, and probably run longer before this happens again.

Iam on the same opinion but i got few reco from other sources and they feel it was fine so just wanted second opinion
