Seeing the Listerine/bourbon post, many years ago as a student, I was told by an old man (probably younger than I am now) that the cure for a cold was a bottle of whisky and a hat. Upon asking for details, "You put the hat on one of the bed posts, then drink the whisky until there are two hats. Then you go to sleep."
Provided I apply the treatment before the cold has taken hold, it works. (Although I don't go quite as far as two hats.)
