You know,,,

i've been wondering about these... (portable dvd players as a source of DIY lcd)

but hold on a minute. I would think that the smaller they are, the more problems you would run into about it being DIY friendly.

for example, i would think that the Liliput 7inch lcd is an exception and that it's great DIY friendliness is a freak of nature or attributed to it's simple production in China instead of japan where the robotic/human assembly lines are more complex. (if made in china it has to be more simple). but most small lcd's are gonna have extremely short and very fragile and difficult to remove FFC's. right?

plus, if using a laptop lcd panel is almost impossible, was would a portable dvd player be easier?

if someone has taking an lcd from a portable dvd player apart or something small other than the liliput, please expand but i bet you're risking a crap load then going with a 15 inch lcd monitor that is very DIY friendly.

I've taken apart a few portable DVD players, and they've all been very 'DIY friendly'. The cables are no more delicate than larger screens, and the backlights are easy to remove, but the resolution isn't brilliant...

Like I mentioned earlier. around 80% of LCD's are Sharp brand. Xenarc's use all Sharp LCD's. I'm not possitive but I think Lilliputs are Sharps aswell. Please correct me on that. but if thats the case(no pun intended) then it should be 'DIY friendly.' As for the CCFL's, I beleive its just band lights like the inside of a toaster (minus the heat and orange glow) which would just appear as another layer of the LCD.

Over on Lumenlab there have been a couple of projectors attempted with broken portable dvd players. The best that has been found is the toshiba 2000, and 2500 series. The lcd's on the Toshiba are stated to be able to do 1024x768 making them the best solution.

actually I think they are 1024 x 600 ..the main problem with dvd players though is input(including the toshiba)..most have at best a composite input which limits your resolution to standard tv rez.... (480i?) ...unless you use the dvd player on the toshiba, still, for a small form factor pj and a 60" diagonal, they are useable.... if you could find one with xga and some component input that would be excellent, though I can' see them putting this on a portable player....

most have at best a composite input
Externally, yes; but some, at least, have individual luma and chroma connections to the controller. Easy to check when experimenting - just feed video into likely pins - one will give a monochrome display, and the other add colour.
The units I've worked on are constructed so that the lid section is in effect a complete LCD monitor. You can 'throw away' the base, and feed power and Y&C to the monitor and it works fine!

WOAH...

I use the TOSHIBA SD-P2500, which has a resolution of 1024x600
its a LVDS panel.

I was told at LL that I cant do this.

I have been on a quest to figure out how to do what you describe dsney.

If I were to upload some pics, could you help figure this out?
It would mean an affordable 8.9" 1024x600 panel for all!
Thanks!

With the possible exception of the Philips DP781, virtually all 7" thru 9" portable have a low 234i resolution. That means above 50" diagonal image you will see pixellation and the resolution will definitely leave you wanting more. Toshiba used to have great panels at that size but all of their current one are 234i.

The only way you can achieve 480i/p resolution is to move up to the 10.4 sizes.
