You can find stainless bowls with no holes. If the holes scare you, search for thoese instead. Wooden bowls would also work.

It makes no sense to compare flat panel thicknesses to that of a sphere. Because of the compound curvature, even 1/8" acrylic is going to be plenty stiff. However, there isn't going to be much internal damping of the material itself, and ringing in the higher frequencies could be an issue.
AFA the acoustic resonances, a couple stainless mesh sieves could be filled with polyfill, clamped together into a small sphere, and suspended in the center. This should help significantly and maintain the high tech look. Alternatively, some sort of tessellated polyhedra could be crafted from foam to accomplish the same thing.
