Would these be good for a DIY projector?
This kind of stuff is getting cheaper all the time and there specs look quite good, 16:9 TFT ect

is that USD?? if it is then those are both rip-offs...you can get a 7" portable dvd player from walmart for $200 USD...they also wouldnt work too well...lots of screen door...
$1 nz = about 60c US
Iv'e seen cheaper ones new for about $300 NZ ($180~200 US) and dont forget you do get the built in DVD player aswell
Are these small sceens known for bad sceen efect or will it depend on the model?

Ususally on these particular units the resolution is very low. Whcih means that once they are projected up on the wall you will get horrible screen door. In other words it will work but it will not be anywhere near as good as a (somewhat cheap) projection panel/overhead projector.
