lol 😀 , that is going to be the biggest "ipod" i'll ever see!
You cant just hook up a lcd panel to a harddrive. You've been thinking too much in my opinion.
A hard drive needs a mother board, memory, video card, power supply etc ( like your computer). What you are thinking of doing is impossible. Ipods have an operating system in it along with all mentioned above.
Go back to the drawing boards.........

Well does anyone hav any ideas im sure i could find batteries and the lcd screen is not ment to be big what else a small motherboard any ideas is there anyone who has thught about this or even tried this???
I have one!
well ok, maybe i didnt make it my self, but my Xerus 282 c, is a tiny laptop which i can watch DivX and VCDs on weathever i go..
dont bother building one, why not pick up an old lappy, mine cost just £250.
for that i get all the pc i need when out and about, 6gb hard drive, external cd and floppy (just copy vcds to hard drive to watch on move) and an intire unit that fits in my bag, all with a 8 inch screen, good stereo sound, and none of the hassle of making my own!

Good Idea
There's a cool product out there called the archos multimedia jukebox (or something...)
you can see a product link here
http://www.archos.com/lang=en//products/prw_500281.html
its cheaper than a 20 gig ipod, and has video out. It plays divx and such, and overall it looks cool. The catch is you have to translate your divx files so its in the format that the multimedia player recognizes (I think its 325x245 or some odd resolution). They claim this resolution is vhs quality although some sites have said its not quite that good. Overall its been getting good reviews, and I suggest you look into it.
I've had my 6 gig archos MP3 player for about 2 years now, and i think its great.
It basically is what you're looking for. If you try to homebrew one yourself, you'll run into many interesting problems. (finding a small enough hard drive is a starting point)
Hope it helps,
Paza
P.S. Adding onto my post, and previous ones, the guys are right, its pretty much a pain to put together everything. Even if you manage to make a small enough mobo and find a small enough processor+ram, you'll run into the problem of processor power. Most low end computers can't cope with decoding divx, and I doubt you'll find an economic mini-microprocessor that has enough juice decode one (people suggest a 800 mhz pentium III). If you manage to squeak out a prototype I'm pretty sure it'll be far more expensive than the archos.

It'd also be cool to do a diy cold fusion reactor...
anyway, how far do you mean when you say DIY? Do you mean printing your own board for the processor and DIVX decoder, or just buying parts seperately and putting it together? I'm sure you could buy a laptop, take it apart and rearrange it so its smaller (no need for keyboard or mouse, smaller LCD screen)... if this qualifies in your DIY it would seem like a fun project. Heck, I'm sure you can find Laptop Mobos and processors and graphics cards online too.

What you want is pretty much like what is being discussed at http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=6552 in the digital forum. It's basically just a computer made for use with a television and depending on how you make it, it can support digital out (dts), etc.
If you look at my projector design in the LCD Panels thread of this forum, I am going to make the computer integrated with my projector and if possible set the computer up to control the projector. eg. turn the lights and fans on, etc.

The main problem with 'portable' DivX is processing power.
Portable DVD, is out, however, so that's something...
The Sony Vaio set of palmtops is small, versatile and fast, but I doubt it can do DivX smoothly enough. And it's only 128 MB, so.
Or you can look for an iPod and flash the firmware, make a nice PCB that can hold the outboard AGP card, etc. Or somehow figure out a way to feed it back into the iPod display 😎 .
Oops, now I've been thinking too much...😉😀
Good idea though, we may come close to a portable all-format player in a few years' time.
