I have a portable CD player that I use as a music source on my motorcycle. I place the player in a saddlebag and have a cable that connects it to a pair of amplified speakers which are mounted on the handlebars. I need a way to adjust volume that I can use while riding. I have a little inline volume control from Radio Shack but it is too small to adjust when wearing gloves. I would like something I can install in my dash with a decent sized rotary knob. Any suggestions as to something I can buy or build with off the shelf components?
Just get a dual 500K log potentimeter, then wire this in line with the speakers. Should work fine.
Just go to your local radio shack and buy one, only costs a couple of dollars.
Then wire it so you have the output signal wires (red & white) of the player going to the middle connections (wipers), the signal wires to the speakers on the RH side and the earths on the left. Typically the earth will be the copper wrapped around the red and white signal wire.

noooo!
this way you will short circuit the player's output at low volume!
you have to do like that:
player's input to the top connector, player's ground to bottom
speaker to the middle connector, and speaker ground to bottom

Thanks guys. Here's another idea... what if I use a motorized pot and added a small switch to the handlebar to control volume? This would allow me to control volume without having to take my hands off the bars.

How can I reduce 12 volts DC to the voltage required to operate the pot motor?
What type of switch should I use to operate the pot motor so I can adjust the volume?
Sorry for the trivial questions... I'm more mechnaically inclined than electrical!
