To avoid intermediate rounding/truncation affecting repeated operations.
Oh, so bit rates and sample rates above 16/44100 *ARE* audible, such as a POMO-like device.
Thanks for clearing that up.
everyone does it at home on a laptop using ProTools in their bedroom.
Some better than others... 🙂

What makes you think that?
If you do an operation that introduces rounding/truncation, and perform it 1000 times, you don't have 16 bits any more, you have much less. OK, even 13 or 14 bits is still enough in most cases, but...
By the way, it is "sample rate" but "number of bits", "bit rate" is something entirely different...
Visit a studio and let a sound engineer explain it to you. You are absolutely clueless what mastering is about.
+1
Are any of you even vaguely aware that studios are disappearing due to changes in technology and the music industry?
That ''mastering'' a recording is now done in home studios most of the time and the file is then uploaded to the bands website?
You all seem oblivious to the fact that Studio>Engineer>Mix>Master is now a dying or dead model.
Some better than others... 🙂
This forum has revealed many insights to me regarding the minds and attitudes of engineers.
Unfortunately I cannot convey said insights as they all involve adjectives and Anglo-Saxon speech that violate the TOS.
Are you vaguely aware that an orchestra does not fit in a home studio? OR that mastering it taught at the University level?

I don't think you have actually read (or understood) my postings, and you don't seem to want to answer any clarifying questions, so I have to ask what it is that you are trying to accomplish, and what is your point?
