Pono to LM3886 Dual Mono (twin amplifier build)

Hi all,

First post here. This journey started a couple years ago by ordering a Thodio A-Box Heavy from Amsterdam of which I received delivery about six months ago. It's a great sounding, battery powered beast that has brightened many informal social gatherings. During the waiting period, I got a TDK 2-Speaker boom box and tore it apart, and rebuilt it with rechargeable LiPo's to replace the D-cells. This was my first diy audio hack. That box is good too.

Then I noticed the Pono player, and got onboard, and received delivery of a few months ago. I'm impressed. Much better, fuller, richer sounding than my iPhone5s.

So now I want to take advantage of the Pono's balanced output, and decided to build the Chipamp dual mono kit as two independent amps in two separate cases.

I'll try to post progress here in this thread so that others along this path will have a reference. I am also looking forward to your feedback (lol).

I ordered a couple of cables (3.5mm to RCA) from Zynsonix, and Bryan was great, and seems to understand the direction I'd like to go.

I'll probably build a couple speakers (looking at the LGK 1.0 from GR research) as a first set.

My first question is: What pair of toroidal transformers should I use?

Thanks!
Eric Ryan

According to the ponomusic web site, the two 3.5mm output jacks provide:

1) personal listening mode via headphones or earbuds,
2) home stereo or in-car listening mode with fixed volume output,
3) PonoShare mode with two pairs of headphones/earbuds,
4) balanced mode provides ultra-performance for advanced users, separating left and right channel outputs across the two jacks. Great for use with high-impedance headphones, high-end home stereo systems, or professional equipment using balanced XLR input connectors.

I plan to wire up either a 3.5mm to R/L RCA or two 3.5mm to RCA (one wired for L only, the other for R only).

I might not be able to spell, but I can make beer! And there will be none for the nitpickers and naysayers. If this is the way this place is, I won't be here long.
