Polarizers required Or Not ?

I thought I've been reading everywhere on this board that the polarizers are required for an lcd panel to work.
Then I found this thread where ace replied:

Ace said none of the sheets are used, he didn't say they were polarizers. The polarizers are built into the LCD, it wouldn't operate without them. An LCD works by twisting light to either pass through or be blocked by a polarizer.
