I imagine something like bc546c and it's partner might work, noise is low, buy large quantities and get good matches, we had this subject up in the bryston 4bsst clone thread,
Probably, but pinout is reversed compared to the PNs and Onsemi has obsoleted the C-version of the BC556 so it is much harder to get them and be sure of their provenance.
What a shame they stopped production, how about some of the lower volt bc transistors, bc550/60Ctheir noise floor is even lower and looks like mouse has them, I'm aware about pin configuration, but it seems you just have to mount them reversed
Available pn100a/ pn200a
Just letting you know that Digikey now has a sizeable stock of both NPN and PNPs.
The BP26 china board is actually a 1:1 clone circuit-wise, except it has omitted some of the features of the original such as phase-inversal and mono output.
As such, it deserves the original semiconductors in my opinion. The Digikey ones you can be certain are genuine, as opposed to Ebay purchases (I now avoid semiconductors and capacitors from Ebay).
BTW: The only real downside to the China clone board, is that the AC input for the source selection and output relays induces a slight hum.
I converted this to DC-input, and placed a bridge, capacitor and regulator in a separate psu section of the chassis (divided by a steel plate).
After doing this, it is completely hum-free.
I used this for remote control: (DIY kit) Remote volume control kit + Aluminum remote control | eBay
Placed it in the psu section to avoid digital noise interference.
Use good regulation in the audio psu part (for instance a shunt-regulated one like this: Assemble low noise precision class A shunt regulated power supply board +-28V New | eBay) and it should be better than the original (that only uses 78xx/ 79xx regulators).
Good luck to anyone building this!

I finally got around to wiring these together. I had to add an extra winding to the transformer for the relay section and also for the remote volume control. Can't recall where I got the transistors from. The Studer PSU is very nice. I completed a chinese discrete BP26 PSU but I'll be sticking to this PSU. An alloy chassis is on the way from China. Normally I'd use local casings of thin sheets but the SQ of this board demands a decent case.

rough512 Impressive build. I am actually doing my own right now. After assembling all elements I see +24V DC is dropping to +19V, so probably I got a stort circuit somewhere. I see the output is short circuited (L and R channel) - it shouldn't be like that. I am searching for the suspicious elements.
I'm considering 2N4401/2N4403s for my amp project. I'm curious to know if these gave you a good result.Hmm, looked at it again. The BC3x7 could be an option, but the capacitance (Cob) is quite a bit higher. I am thinking the 2N4401/2N4403s look like a good candidate and I have those already. Any objections to those? 😉
