I f you plug a high level source such as a cd player into the phono section of a receiver and one channel goes dead what component is most likely to fail in this scenario?
Resistor , cap, transistor?

This happened to a friends receiver. and it was given to me to fix. As it turned out nothing was really wrong except that the balance control was dirty causing one channel to fade in and out while rotating. I cleaned it out with electrical contact cleaner and all is good now.
