plitron vs. victoria magnetics?

yeah, it might be awhile though. im having my brother design the chassis/case for me. he's a design major out in NYC. he works with multimillion $ contracts and he has good taste. let's hope he can design something really unique for me. i have a decent sized budget left for the case, so it should look awesome.

quite frankly, at this point, i just wanna put it all in a cardboard box, power it up, and listen 🙂

Good stuff.

Can't wait to see the pictures and your impression of the sound. Have no doubt about it.

Trigon.🙂

hehe, well, i have around 2000 parts left over after getting exact tolerences... ill probably sell them off in sets on here. i could probably put together 5 sets of aleph2 monoblocks with them... the only thing i dont have extras of (well, i have extras but not THAT many) are the 5W power resistors. but those are cheap. ill probably put them up in the trading post after i get it all soldered, just put in your order, ill work out a good price 🙂 god knows i got them cheap! hehe, i think i paid around $0.09 each!

Could I get few from you...free...? 😉

cardboard SNORT SNORT SNORT hehe that would be something that i would doo ( as we all seen in the previouse pics.. LOL ) im building aleph 2's als please keep me updated as i need resistors also and good ones no more ceramic crap. hehee.. ill be ordering plitron transformers.. i liiked them and they had good service and vm is in the us and im in canada i hate exhangerates and crap like that : O )

Victoria Magnetics VS Plitron

I live about 15 minutes away from Victoria Magnetics and talk to the owner a lot about various stuff. He is a very nice guy. They are a small company, unlike Plitron, so their prices might be a bit more, but he doesn't charge any extra for custom designs (no tooling charges). He is quite supportive of the DIY community.

I have had good luck with their transformers, as have my friends. They are the only toroid transformers that I have ever used, and all that I have to compare them with is some older EI core transformers. As far as lead times, he has gotten all the transformers that I have ever asked for done within a week.

As far as transformers, if you can decide what you need and how you want the transformer built for you, he can do it for you.

hey, im finally ordering the transformers for my aleph2's and i was curious what ppl think about victoria magnetics as opposed to plitron?

i was looking to get 2 1.5KVA transformers for my monoblocks, and 6 1KVA transformers for the other six channels. which would be better for this purpose? i see that victoria magnetics has a bit better shielding than the plitron, at what seems to be the same cost... any opinions here?

He can make up to 2kVA if you want to run multiple channels off of one transformer. You could easily run 3 channels off one 2kVA transformer. This all depends on your chassis design, and the 2kVA is huge, (8" diameter, 4" tall and 32 pounds, taken from the line conditioner page which uses a 2kVA transformer)

Here is a picture of a 2kVA transformer that they make for the line conditioner:

Brian,

i think you sold me. i like companies like this... and i like the turnaround time, and the fact that they are in the US. i dont mind paying more for it either. ill give em a go. i would rather do separate transformers for the 2 channel alephs. since cost isnt an issue really, i think fully discrete transformers would be best.

thanks for advice, i think ill get the two that peter is offering and just get the rest later.

id like to build a lin conditioner are they hard. i have lots of spikes and crap in teh ac lin here in prince rupert. i was told there is such a devise that when the ac voltage goes up and down but when useing this box with somthing in it ( toroidal transformer and stuff ) that you get a constant out no mater what the voltage drop is any one know what i am talking about..

well, there are a few things you could be talking about.

there is a line conditioner, line stabilizer, and a voltage regulator. the line conditioner simply removes noise and nasties from the ac line (or crosstalk noise from components). the line stabilizer does kinda what you are talking about, where it shaves off spikes and fills in peaks. basically, it stabilizes the voltage. the last one is a true voltage regulator. it actually, well, regulates the voltage 🙂

the line stabilizer typically does its job by filters, big cap banks, and transformers. the voltage regulator is actually a stepdown transformer feeding a step up transformer. it recreates the wall outlet voltage. think of it as a HUGE powersupply for your equipment. like an aleph power supply that generates 120vac, rather than 35vdc.

i ran across this site last night, has an AC line filter on it. looks pretty simple.
