Hi, I've got a pair of HPD 315 Tannoys which are begging to be be placed in some kind of box. I got an online calculator, entered all the Small/Thiele figures that were requested (Fs=25; Vas=276 l; Qts=0.2; Otc= magic 0.707). I was expecting to get something in range of 50-100 liters, since the original boxes for these speakers were 65 liters (Cheviot) and 42 liters (Devon). Can you imagine my surprise and total, total, TOTAL confusion when I got figure of 24.01 liters? 😕 Could anyone of you share his wisdom - what the heck is going on here? Or even better, could someone share a decent plans for a new home for these nice speakers? Thanks!
You have been calculating the volume of a closed box, but the Tannoy speakers are vented. Compare my simulation results:
Closed box: 20.5 litres, f3=107 Hz
Vented box: 30-55 litres, f3=87-55 Hz
I recommend a vented box around 40 litres.

Thanks for reply. Just checked, and yes, you're right, both Tannoy boxes that I referred to are vented. I suppose the bigger box would help to get the bottom-end down. But what would be trade-off if I gain a bit more bass in, say 55 liter box?
The transient response of a larger box is poorer (more boom boom). But 55 litres should be ok, still smaller than the Cheviot...
