Playing with OB speakers

I just received a pair of Vifa TC9FD from PE to try in my "Notion" speakers.
What is the preferred way of mounting these on a 3/4" thick baffle. Counterbore the backside of the baffle to some acceptable thickness? Or front mount with suitable recess for the flange? Thanks in advance.
Peter

Counterbore has worked best for me. Have also used a larger hole - about 6"- with a thinner baffle in the hole. Both work well. If you rear mount it in 3/4" ply, you'll be making a short waveguide in the front. Not disastrous, but you an do better.

Sidetracked by LXmini.

I had good intention of installing the Vifa TC9s in my "notions", but before I had gathered enough ply to make the new baffles, I decided, on my trip to Lowes, to pick up a length of thin wall 4" pvc and a 4"/6" pvc reducer and in less than 8 hours had assembled a pair of speakers inspired by all the good stuff I have read about the LXmini. I had a pair of Peerless nomex woofers sitting in the closet that I used along with the Vifas.
Well, these are the most musical speakers I have ever had in my smallish room and the best bang for the buck yet. I've read about "disappearing" speakers, but had never experienced it to this degree. Stunning wall of sound and live recordings sound amazing.
The only downside is that I'll now have to buy another pair of Vifas, because these aren't going anywhere.

so even compared to your larger OBs a.k.a Notions you still find the LXmini-like creature extraordinary?

that's not good news since I am also committed down the same path; i.e. I started the large format OBs right before SL published the minis. btw Papa Pass also endorsed them, only the bass driver requires a lot of gain for SL's EQ to work. but it sounds like I would really be missing out on something if I didn't give them a try, (it's just all the $s and the effort that's already gone into the OBs; I feel like :deer:).

I could live with either one-I think. All my speakers are used strictly for music-no home theater at all.
I haven't listened to the Notions since I build my version of the LXmini 3 weeks ago. The significant advantage of the larger speaker is the W frame woofer(s) and the additional excellent bass extension.
The advantage of the other is the "ambience" they seem to create in the room. They provide the most spacious sound that I have heard in my room.. I haven't really listened to them with an analytical perspective as I normally do. I have just been enjoying the music after setting up the minidsp. The bass is certainly not lacking with EQ and my rudimentary measuring system shows F3 in the low 40s and I have no need for a subwoofer.
I will continue with the Notions when I decide to buy another pair of the TC9s.

Hi Bill....
They would probably suit your room to a "T". I initially set the minis about 60" apart at a listening distance of about 8 ft. I then moved them further apart, disconnected them and listened to my Apogee ribbon/rs180 setup for a while. When I hooked up the mini again, I left them about 8 ft apart, creating more or less an equilateral triangle with the listening position. The improvement in soundstage and imaging is even better.

LXminis

I haven't really listened to them with an analytical perspective as I normally do. I have just been enjoying the music after setting up ...

well to me this sounds like the ultimate compliment for the design. not really what I was looking to hear though. you seem to still notice an "ambiance" difference in radiation pattern even when comparing mini to a true dipole?).

so now that I am considering LXMini as an interim build until (hopefully) I perfected my bigger OBs: my issue is I would like to use a Pass amp on top. the problem is an added 10dB attenuation SL applied for EQuing the full range driver.

current strategy: I am thinking, if I am not mistaken, that the 2x10Hd miniDSP should have an option for a 6dB higher output (SL is using 2x4 with only 0.9V out?), plus I could add 8dB gain with Juma's bf862 preamp and then 15dB of F5 on top, so I hope that the overall gain should be sufficient. (since I am not looking to get rid of amps into which i invested so much time and $s; this is where my bigger OB should have an advantage😉.

p.s. since this discussion now includes also LXmini you may want to ask moderators to edit your thread title to include it as well (so we attract the right audience). just saying...

LXminis are just minis, many people seem to forget it! They are not meant as main speakers in a hifi system like LX521, max spl is moderate.
Quote fom Mr Linkwitz "The whole point about the LXmini is its small size, easy placement, simplicity of construction and low budget, while delivering reference quality sound, albeit with some restrictions at the low end, mainly for organ or disco types of music."

Notions again

I bit the bullet and bought another minidsp2x4 to further the development of the Notions. The 4 ways are now powered by a two channel Symasym and a two channel D class amp on each side. All crossed and EQd through a minidsp2x4 each. crossovers are all LR4(at the moment) at 100hz, 700hz and 6000hz.
All in early stages of listening and adjusting, with the little 2" Fountek 58ex doing upper mid duty. (I may well try a waveguide XT25 sometime soon without the Daytons on top).

Koja.....as good as the little LXminilikes are, the Notions are now growing up and sound much Grander. The wall of sound is huge extending way beyond the enclosures and depth is extraordinary. Dispersion and ambiance are the best I have heard in my room.
