So years ago, Number One son and I built this Plasma Speaker from the Kickstarter...

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/excelphysics/the-arc-plasma-speaker

A supercool little project...I actually looked at building a speaker set with these doing 2k and up...until I realized the shock danger and Ozone emitted... too bad...

Anyway I work with many fellow Engineers and Accountants... I am always amazed at how simple and Un-Technical these Accountants (I WORK WITH) are...no offense to any of us that are....

I setup a little Demo of this plasma speaker at work one day...

Engineer #1 - that is soo cool!!
Engineer #2 - Where can I get one!!
Accountant #1 - My Dell Desktop speaker sounds better.

Sigh....

Are we to hear some music on that vid?
There is music on that vid, but had to cut the vid short due to size constraints...

I dont think he was the "starter" ;)
Yup, I was not the starter...glad I got in on one...should have bought two....

@john65b You should check out the Allan Hill plasma tweeter...

Yes, I saw that Plasma Tweeter a while ago...great sound, but dangerous! Aphixiant and/or poisoning Ozone a bit concerning....

At last Capital Audio Fest, there was german speaker manufacturer who demonstrated speakers with plasma tweeters. They sounded ok. Point was, they run the plasma so hot that even ozon was broken down. So no ozon issue.

john65b, my appologies for accusing you from scamming backers, i assumed you were the kickstarter. Sorry about that.

Adason, no problem...That German manufacturer I believe was MBL?

My Speaker definitely emits Ozone - I can smell it - those who have been near a lightning strike know the smell of Ozone....hard to describe....kinda rancid....

From what I read thru the Kickstarter comment thread, there were relatively few who did not get the project completed/working. They did issue a few packages with incorrect diode and cap...they quickly fixed it...

A problem with the Hill Plasmatronic tweeter is that it needed a cylinder of helium gas, which nowadays is extremely expensive and wasteful of a non-renewable resource, those snobby little helium atoms.
Don't blame the helium atoms, blame the real criminals.
Either "The Accountants", for finding a reason to attach an inflated value to this, that has nothing to do with the cost to produce it...
Or "Every Parent", who have for decades selfishly wasted this precious resource to inflate party balloons for a moments peace from the plague of children they have spread across the planet.
Yup who would have known the damage to the planet that breeding accountants would cause. 😏

Cheers

Hi,

I don't think MBL was into plasma speakers .... they are into exotic omnidirectional bending wave transducers.
The german manufacturer of horn loaded tweeters was Plasmaspeakers GmbH.
Afair Alfred Rudolph used it commonly with his enigmatic horn systems.
Today Lansche Audio seems to continue with this kind of horn loaded plasma tweeter.
Another incarnation of a omnidirectional tweeter was Magnat's plasma tweeter, a big block of electronics with a golden sphere on top.
