Hi,
In your opinion is it a joke?

Why would it be a joke?
If everyone was using these there would be no problems with the ozone layer. (this is a joke)

At least in the USA, and likely in EU, an illegal RFI generator...
Might sound ok, but it is not shielded, the plate of the tube is exposed, etc. etc.

Hi,
well the seller won´t regard it as a joke and it might in praxi even work sufficiently, but --and this is a big but-- besides the problem bear already mentioned, there are at least two more problems.
The first is: how and how often to replace the electrode
and second: where to place the thing? Every designer of decent speakers places the drivers in close proximity to each other to cope with phase issues. The shown plasma won´t allow for this. So, independent of the sheer driver´s sound qualitity, this completely impractical design renders itself rather useless. It´s a nice gimmick for show and tell, but no serious driver for a firstclass loudspeaker....that´s all.

I strongly recommend, to be critical reading this link mentionned above
http://www.plasmatweeter.de/eng_plasma.htm
Why?
Ulrich Haumann made a mistake by adapting the circuit from DuKane and used wrong voltages.
He has overseen that the psu from DuKane was driven by 117V and not 230V
And you can find many rebuilders, doing the same error.
O.K., the PL509 can stand the Haumann 600V, but does it sound good?
Smile
Franz
/Edit: be also critical with this original circuit: there is no tranny at the input of the psu and therefore no galvanic separation!

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I am in total agreement here. To not talk about the diffraction effects of that "stuff" all around ! 😀

From looking at the auction he has created a tweeter and toaster oven in one easy to use package.
Nobody mentioned the fact that it's a Nitrous Oxide generator too.

Does "150,00 Euros" mean 150 Euros, i.e. about US$190 per tweeter? That's a lot cheaper than the Acapella or Lansche plasma tweeters, which cost many thousands of dollars per tweeter last time I checked.

Yes, those silly Europeans like to use commas as decimal separators instead of periods.
