I've been asked to build a cab for a friend, which is something new to me. It's for an electro-acoustic guitar so it's kind of a mix between a classical cab and a powered PA speaker. It will use a 12" full range vintage goodmans and a DIY amp housed in a 19" 1u case. The amp has a class D output amp so it's quite cool.
I've drawn a preliminary sketch but I'd really welcome suggestions from people more experienced. 🙂
The pics attached show most of it, some explanations:
- the cab will use all 15mm baltic birch plywood, except the front cover to which the fabric will be stapled, which is made of 8mm.
- it will be painted with black warnex (same as duratex in the US).
- the driver will be rear mounted.
- size is 515mm*452mm*300mm (W*H*D).
And some questions:
- the back will be removable, but is there any sense in making it in three parts, to have the possibility of an open back ? It might be useful if used with an electric guitar and a head amp ?
- should I have something to protect the driver ?
- should the driver be somewhat recessed into the baffle, like 5mm ?
- should the driver be centered or should I rather put it a bit on the side ?
- I plan to cut handles on the top of the cab, near the amp. Would it be enough ?
Lots of questions, sorry 😱

That looks like a relatively fragile hifi speaker, forget gigging-hardened performance equipment.
Maybe you could back up a bit and discuss what your friend asked for and what s/he intends to use it for?

Well, the driver has been gigging since the late 60's (for guitar and voice, in pubs, community halls, this kind of things). So I'm not too worried about that part. It's just that it is housed in an old, completely beaten up particle board cab which really needs to be replaced.
It is also not very practical to have the cab and the amp in two parts right now, hence the integration of the two.

Oh, I see now. So you are making a combo amp out of an old cab.
Why not.
Typically the driver has some protection. If you are using grille cloth, then recessing the baffle and making a removable fabric grille with it's own frame that is flush to the front edge is one technique.
I like centering.
Only trick here is to measure centre of gravity BEFORE installing handle. Carrying a cab by handle when it is permanently leaning away from the handle is infinitely annoying and conducive to scraped legs.

Point is that it´s a 20 Watt rated speaker, what are you driving it with (output power and impedance?)?
Is it 8 o 16 ohm?
