Anybody out there did some good sound mods on the Pioneer DVD-656 player?
I find that the unit in its original form offers a lot of musical detail from CDs but tend to sound a bit harsh on the highs.
Appreciate it if you could share your experience and results in improving the sonic quality of what is already a very good piece of gear for the price.

General method.
You will notice that the general method of upgrading players is by modifying the following :
1. Upgrade the output stage opamps
2. remove or change output mute ( with a relay ) and better non
polar capacitors or remove them.
3. Improve power supply by any of the following methods.
* Better capacitors
* better regulators
* separate transformer for the analog section
4. Use a better system clock (Kwak clock etc )
5. Damp the cabinet top , bottom and sides

Power supply diodes (I dont know if yours has a linear, or a switched mode psu..) should be changed to Schottky - seems this can reduce treble roughness and harshness quite a bit.
Remove the feet and use 3 wooden cones, if you can get some. This will help transform the character to a more mellow, natural one (especially when combined with some damping).
A braided power cable, and/or mains filtering may also help reduce harshness, and grain, slightly.
The other mods suggested will probably improve it in many, many ways
