Pioneer Changer doesn't see disks

My father in-law gave me an old Pioneer 6 disk changer that had been giving him trouble ("Gee, thanks dad"). It wouldn't see a disk about half the time. I set it up in the garage and used it for about a year. The problem got to the point that it doesn't see any disks (CD or CDR).

I've read that there is an adjustment on the laser circuit that can be turned up (gain?) that can possibly fix this problem. Anyone know what I am talking about?
