Bought off ebay 1-2 years ago as NOS. Haven't done more than play them mildly for an hour free air with 45uF for protection, using 8" woofer with coil under. Pioneers don't sound bad, maybe even good.
Their construction is curious to me because they don't have separate surrounds, just the cone material has a roll then is glued to frame.
Thought someone would know something about this type. Maybe their just for clock radios or something, tho seem better than that.

Substantial magnet on those... the integrated accordian surround means little bass but no change in material impedance as the waveform hits the surround. Could well make a decent mid-tweeter.

I'd guess they were out of a small box, 3/8 or 1/2" ply, rear mounted, with a masonite back, possibly filled with small holes. 8-9" tall, 6" wide, 5" deep. Usually finished in walnut (real veneer).

What would happen if you cut the surround with a razor all the way around but leaving four small sections NSEW, say, no more than 1/2cm wide to hold it? I was just thinking of a cheap way to make a 'surroundless' speaker like Fertin did, but without the nasty-looking wire.
Don't freak out, it would just be experimentation!

I do have 4 of these and might coat the cones on 2 and maybe even phase plugs. Then compare to untreated over time.
After an afternoon the midrange is very nice. Vocals, speech, guitars especially - "relaxed and natural", like they designed for then it seems. Crash cymbals still unruly, cymbal dome pretty real. Worth playing with.
