""Does your av processor have stereo sub outs then?
Your not listening to mono bass are you ?""
80Hz down is mono - don't have the space to setup a stereo pair of labs at the moment😉 (room is 20' x 10') I cut the pieces for 4 labhorns so that if I ever get a room big enough.......
Cheers,
Rob

Aha.
1 Lab now and 4 later ??
You wont get any sunlight in that room ....
You could still do the test though by sending fullrange stereo to the DCX and let the DCX cutoff at 80Hz.
Who knows, you might notice an improvement just by doing it that way.....
Anyway feel free to ignore me.

Collin

Hi Collin,
Its 2 labs right now (1 on top of the other, firing into a corner) , 2 'flat packed' in the garage.
I'm not ignoring you - If I sent full range to the dcx I'd still have to make up custom leads so I could send full range to both dcx's. 1 dcx manages a 3-way pair, the other does the subs... so I'd have to make a splitter cable. If it was just a case of fiddling with the front panel I'd have done it by now and let you know my opinion..
The processors a Lexicon DC-2 if thats of interest.
Right now the stereo left and right goes to one dcx for the 3 -way mains, and the subwoofer out goes to the second dcx for the labs / tempests. Leaves enough spare on the second dcx for my centre channel (when its done)
I haven't got the spare connectors laying about to solder up a splitter cable and I'm not going to buy them just to check something for you - no offence but I really haven't got the time / money at the moment..
Hey - If you want to solder up and send me a couple of cables for a Christmas present I'll have a listen for you🙂 I'd need a phono - 2 xlr's ( x 2 )
Cheers😀 ,
Rob.
Hi Rob,
Sorry for the misunderstanding..What i meant with "feel free to ignore me" was if you dont want to take the time and trouble thats fine. I geuss i should have said it differently.
Anyway what i'm trying to point out is that combining the bass and using it in mono might be compromising the sound..
I DONT mean in the sense that there might be stereo information lost but more that doing it something seems wrong..
I cant say its the DCX or just the nature of running mono bass yet. Maybe your lexicon does it differently mabey not.
Your setup deserves attention on this matter.
Regards,
Collin

Hi Coolin,
Maybe try a mono recording and see if the effect still happens. It could be that there are differences between channels in the 40 - 80Hz range that are giving weird effects. Ie: there could be some fundamentals from a piano that are in the left channel added to the right channel when you sum the L+R. That would sound ok with both mains playing as the piano would be present on the left speaker, but if you played the right speaker only with summed sub you get the piano 'sub' bits added in.
If you listened to a mono recording it should sound ok.
Cheers,
Rob.

Thanks noodle - the first plot😀
How would you describe the sound ? I'm assuming thats a 1 oct true rta plot. Shows ~very~ general trend..
Cheers!
Rob.
I have some tempests - did you go from sealed to EBS?

At that time the overall sound was quite bright. It was definately too loud from 3-6khz. I ended up padding the tweeter a bit more, and placing a 0.15mh inductor and 2.2ohm resistor in parallel before the 27TDFC tweeter. The sound seems to be much flatter, and more natural now. The drop by 200hz indicates the need for some baffle-step compensation.
I know i have large (12db) peaks and dips in my bass response). The peaks are at 110hz, 75hz, and a smaller one at 40hz.
Edit: The tempest was in a 195l sonotube ported to 18hz, predicted rolloff was at about 25hz. There were problems with its design including zero port flare on its 6in port.

ahem

I'm hoping my drastic roll-off above 4kHz is a result of using the built in laptop soundcard, or the RS mic.
It doesn't sound bad to me, but then I am sensitive to high frequencies and prefer less bright systems.
Hi Coolin,
For the next couple of weeks my system is setup as such ;
Full range stereo out from pre-amp, with y leads splitting signal to each dcx.
1st dcx does the 3 way mains, second dcx is summing left and right and doing mono subwoofer duties.
What did you want me to listen out for exactly ?
Cheers,
Rob.
