After enjoying a number of BLH's (Medallion, Carfrae, Ketil's Big Fun, Tannoy GRF-R, plus my own designed C-Horn), Im shifting to front loaded horns.

Last year, I built the Cornscala (thanks Bob Crites!), using the two way design (Faital Pro 1.4 inch driver and matching eliptical horn). Loved it.

For my new project, I've ordered a set of the 250Hz and 1,000Hz StereoLabs stone/composite horns from German. A mid blue colour will be selected.

The customer projects from Stereolabs is a good read....especially the pics of the blue horns, which are similar to what I'm doing.

Drivers are Selenium 2-inch D405 and tweeter D220Ti

For mid-bass, I'm using the Inlow Sound designed horn (thanks John). I made up a cardboard cut out of the horn...and yesterday I prepared the horn internal panels using 6mm MDF. Once glued up, I will build up the wall thickness using a sandwhich of ply and MDF.

Drivers are B&C PE32 12-inch.

Custom designed Crites x-over.

For sub, I have the large Bill Fitzmaurice Tuba (low profile version).

Amp is a lovely new 2A3 unit from Weston Acoustics (Melbourne, Australia), using dual 2A3's/side in push-pull config.

A fun project for sure.

Pic of amp. About 10 watts RMS/side. I opted for PP over SET because I originally wanted the extra grunt to drive the Cornscala 15-inch bass drivers (Eminence). With the 2A3's, I get the sweetness of those valves plus the power of PP. A good mix.

Now that I'm going to full horns, I may go back to SET.

Andrew,
Sounds interesting. Did you try adding a front horn to any of the BLH's you have? Not in a compound horn configuration, but just using a front horn from say ~1K upwards? Since you have the BLH horns.

SMathews

PS. We exchanged emails on the Carfrae LBH.

Hi smathews

No, I haven't built a front horn for my blh's....that would be good to try, and there's a few out there.

As to carfrae, I'm working on a different blh using the large tractrix horn shape, but with the 25 mm cnc'd acrylic sides. Internals will be exposed ply like my c-horn design. No sub. German full range drivers....high end.

Regards

I did something similar but used the Big Heil for the tweeter off to the side where you have your tweeter horn. I really like the way it sounds and it images like crazy with lots of depth and clarity. Of course like all round horns, if I get 6" off center with my seating position, the imaging falls apart, but I only sit in one place anyway.

Yours look very good. I like the thick wood flair around the woofs.

Hi atisley : very nice project. Just a question, would it be possible to build the mid-bass-horn for the B&C with a freestanding tractrix horn too ? And it goes from 100 - 250 Hz ? What is the geometry and why does the throat first contract from 9 to 4.25 inches ? The difference between a Inlow or Stereo Lab tractrix horn for the upper ranges in your perception, what decided you ? regards Marc

Thanks. To clarify, the pic with the blue horns and the dual woofers is not mine...that's taken from the Projects Page on Stereolabs.

I will be building a mid-bass front firing horns...not a
boring' conventional bass box like those...! In saying that, the dual bass set-up, whilst conventional, would still sound good...and is mroe room friendly for placement. However, it is a compromise when you're going for the full horn thing.

Thanks Chano.

Sure..the Inlow mid bass would be a killer for 100-250...but I opted for 500 because I wanted to run the compression drivers from the lowest sensible point possible...eg 500. If lower, then I'd need another horn, eg 250Hz using Fane 8 inch driver ir similar.

So, it came down to chossing the horns and cross-overs.

Avantage Trio's use the smaller paper driver to go from about 250....but I wanted a compression driver for this mid range. So, to some extent, my system will compete with the Trio's, except, my horn sub bass will **** all over the Trio's.

Forgot about your 1 re geomotry.

Inlow plus Paul spencer of Red Spade Audio both modelled this horn to get a great flat response from 100-600Hz.....

Also, look at Sterelab's large 90Hz horns....expensive....but if you wanted to re-create a Trio, then this is a bargain. 3,999 Euro/each, with 10inch throat and 100cm mouth.

Others out there also, eg our own Aussie Azura horns.

Azurahorn -Le Cleac'h Acoustic Horn Loudspeakers

I've also thought of building a 100cm round horn using CNC'd layers of Euro Birch ply...then turned on a vertical lathe for finishing/sanding. I've proven the CNC method with many other horns I've built, eg GOTO bass horn.

More horning tonight, with joins filled. For edges on horn 2, I used router, not jigsaw...much better. Will glue up that horn tomorrow.

Chasing some good drivers second hand, if anyone knows of some. Must have low qts...and dB around 99/100.

Thanks Atilsley. I ended up going with a box for my horn system only because I had them and my new room is smaller. your build is looking good.
