Have been doing some rolling. Seems changing the triodes isn't making much difference. The gain stays much the same.

Miniwatt (Australian Philips) 12au7 gives a little sparkle and a slightly muddy bass. Mullard 12ax7 is a little thin. Miniwatt 12ax7 is well balanced but a little bland. Miniwatt 6es8 (low rp) has bass slam but is light on the top end.

Still these differences are not great. I wish they would give me a sign as to what attributes I'm looking for. I may go octal, at least I know the sound of my 6sn7's.

EC8010, Took a while but now it's sunk in about setting up the fet first. Like when SY said (NTE458 on bottom, running at 2mA), and build the rest around it.

Thanks for the persistence, I will still chase an answer for the other things.
