(Hope it's the good place to post.)
Hi,
Was looking for a simple and cheap function generator. First checked on ebay then realized that there are applications running on phones that can deliver up to 20-22kHz signals through the headphone plug.
As anyone tried or is anyone using this kind of application as a simple function generator? If yes, any app to recommand, qualitywise?
Thanks.

A smart phone is a complex piece of equipment. In your case, you have to make sure any circuit under test does not inject harmful signals into the phone. You have also to consider what happens to waveforms when their frequency approaches 22kHz.
You may be able to get the same functionality and isolation from the phone, if you use a bluetooth speaker with the speaker removed and replaced with appropriately valued resistors. Your output would be connected to the speaker's terminals.

Indeed, harmful signals for the phone, did not think about that.
It's to check/adjust an amplifier, the signals (both from the amplifier input and from the phone output) should be checked with an oscillo before any connection.

There's myriad such applications available; some can do analysis as well as provide a signal. I got a paid one, to avoid "nags" - something a hardware function generator wouldnt ever do ;') It's SpectrumEye...for Apple spectrum eye RTA on the App Store
There's also the file route, where you can get a USB file reading amplifier that plays music files. Download files with sweeps, warbles, fixed tones, white noise, pink noise - etc. Many of these amps use analog input class D amps, where I'm sure you could tap off a signal. All in the <$20 range on ebay.
Unsure what the initial distortion value is, say, coming out of the chip making the analog signal from a music file with a recorded sine wave...

Actually you may be pleasantly surprised with analog output of your phone. I have seen some outstanding measurements. Of course every model will be different.
