She lives again! I left the player on for about an hour, got it properly warmed up, and then it worked! all it needs is to be at the right temperature. It must then be a bad solder joint. When i have the time, i will inspect all the joints on the chips guido mentionned and hopefully solve the problem for good!
thanks guido for you patience.
oh, i have the 7210 not the m4808.

Hi there,
I’ve got a problem with my recently bought Philips CD 650. I did some mods (non oversampling mode, reduced analog filter, exchanged electrolytics) and sound was really nice.
I also measured distortions after this mods. Both channels measured good and identical.
Then I installed a TentXO with the powersupply suggested on Guido Tents homepage. The TentXO is connected to Pin11 of SAA7220. I removed the two smd ceramic caps, the 150k Ohm smd resistor and the original 11MHz quarz. Now distortions on the right channel increased by 25dB.
So I removed TentXO and put in the orignal quartz. But it didn’t help. Distortions increased again and signal level on right channel is higher than on left channel. Short time later the inserted CD started to spin very fast.
Now I’ve found out, that the CD player can read CDs and works “properly” (except for high distortion and increased signal level on right channel) for the first two minutes when started cold. After two minutes playback stops and the CD starts to spin at high speed.
I checked if there would also be distortions on right channel when using an external DAC and SPDIF signal from CD650. But it measured well.
Could it be that SAA7210 just died? But why would then SPDIF out still work properly? Or is something wrong with XSYS (buffered clock output of SAA7220)?
I’m a bit puzzled right now and I appreciate every hint.
Fabian
