Philips CD471 - a bargain but the lens falls off

Hi all,

I just won a Philips CD471 on Ebay for £3 plus postage. The player was DOA and after a quick look inside it was no surprise - the lens had fallen off!

If I put it back in place it reads perfectly on normal CDs and tracks very quickly with no skipping or other issues. The mechanism is a Philips CDM4/11.

This is a lovely sounding player as it has the classic TDA1541A (R1 edition too) and SA7220P/A digital filter.

Anyway - any ideas on how to reattach the lens without causing damage? I expect superglue would cause problems with the plastic!

"Superglue" (cyanocrylate) is horrible stuff - a poor compromise in almost every application! The best would be two-part epoxy (Araldite, Pratley or Pattex are the brands I know), 'standard setting' 90 minutes, not quick-set.
You can apply a really tiny dab with a toothpick where necessary, and it stays unset for long enough to not have to hurry your work.

IF you make a mess, you can wash the epoxy off (not easily, but its a lesser mess than other glues)

Generally epoxy is a safe adhesive - it doesn't give off solvents as it dries. There is always a small risk that any glue can damage some exotic plastics, but epoxies are less likely than many others. The early Philips were renowned for their glass lenses, but yours may not be that old.

The beam(s) only emerge from the very centre of the lens, so if you do make a bit of a mess around the edges, in all probability it will make no difference.

Just be careful to clean the UNDERSIDE of the lens very well (ethanol) before glueing it - and then don't touch that side. After its glued, you won't easily get it out to clean it.

A few years ago I had the exact same thing happen to a DVD player, don't recall what make it was, some cheap Wal-fart thingy. The lens on that one was a press-fit, just had to bend the lens holding tabs(they were really tiny) a little bit to restore enough friction to fix it. Don't know if this applies to your situation, but I thought I'd pass it along anyway.

Good luck!
