Philips CD304 Tray Motor

Hi I have a technical question regarding a Philips CD304, which I bought circa 1984, so I realise that getting an answer maybe a long-shot.

I have heard a fair few CD players over the years and some very expensive ones, but to my ears, this unit is as good as as any those and better than most, so I have never hankered to replace it. As an audio reproduction device it has been bullet-proof, but a couple of years after purchase the tray motor failed and as I found it easy to open the tray with my fingernails, I never bothered to fix it.

I have recently had a crossover capacitor fail in a Monitor Audio speaker of a similar age and got to thinking that it might be sensible to visit the electrolytics in this unit. While I am in there I thought I would get round to fixing the tray. Only 30-years late. 😀

The part number on my motor is 4322 010 72560, but the service manual shows it to be a 4822 361 20483 (same as for the CD104 and CD204 players). Perhaps Philips had run short when they were building my player? Wrong spec motor may be the reason it failed so soon? Who knows, in any case my friend Google is letting me down with any useful info on these motors. It certainly seems they are not available for purchase any longer.

So the question is this: does anyone know what sort of spec I should be looking for in terms of voltage, RPM and torque for a replacement? I guess it is a 12V DC, as 9V seems to be trying to drive it? And something with the same mounting holes ideally.

As a said, I know it's a long-shot, but maybe someone knows.

I hope so.

Thank you.

Hi,

In the UK you can purchase very good used CD players for
next to nothing compared to original prices. £30 will get
you some serious player if you know the models well.

YMMV but things haven't stayed the same for 30 years.

rgds, sreten.

Sreten, following your suggestion, I took a look on ebay. There are two CD304 players currently for sale, as far as I can see: one at £260 and the other at £385.

I really do want to fix it now. I am genuinely interested in what players you would recommend at £30 though. Do you have any recommendations of models I should be taking a look at please?

Thanks.
