can anybody help.I was given a CD303 that didnt work. Disc would spin for 10 seconds then stop spinning.Nothing appeared on the digital screen.I took it to a repair shop and they removed and cleaned the laser. All went fine for about 2 weeks,display worked and played cd,s normally. Now it has failed again same fault as before.I went back to the repair shop and they said the laser had died.Can you accurately check a laser if the disc only spins for 5 second or can faulty caps cause this fault.I was reading various posts on the web which suggests to re cap the power supply and check for dry joints.Is there any specific caps i should be replacing other than the ones in the power supply.I want to save this cd player please help. Couple of things you can do.
With the top off start the cd without a disc, don't look directly into the laser but form an angle and if you see a red pinpoint/glow it normally means the laser is still working.
A known problem is with an axial electolytic cap in the laser focus circuit, it's usually a 33 or 47uf value. It's connected between pin 17 of the signal processor chip and earth. When they get old they often fail and are very often the cause of perceived laser failure.
If you get the laser back it's probably worth replacing any other electrolytics around the laser circuit as well.

The Philips 'light pen' as they called it in those players lasts forever - very, very seldom fails. Better hope that this 'repair shop' didn't do a fudge fix and just increase the laser current, because that CAN finish off an otherwise good & potentially long-lived laser.
I've had the small silver axial caps - the 1% ones - fail on 2 players. In the audio section they make a roaring sound, in the radial servo they make it behave completely erratically.
Replacements don't need to be 1%.
Does that player have the printed circuit board with little pins linking the two copper layers of the PCB? If so, those pins have a reputation for poor contact & need to be resoldered.

Just one thing....
Don't be tempted to increase the value of the electrolytics on the laser pcb. Some are critical and the thing will not work.

Hi. My repair man was wanting information regarding the power supply as all the manuals we download have no information on the power supply.He was wanting information on the pin out. Also the caps had been removed and not recorded.If any has any information from the power supply to the rest of the unit this would be most appreciated.He said he does not want to power up untill he has the correct readings on the power supply. It sounds like he is a real W**K*r.
The PSU is very straightforward and should be well within the knowledge of a competant person.
I have the schematics but cannot acces them at the moment.
If no-one else sends them, I will dig them out when I get home.
