I made the PC board that is in the documentation for the 8920 chip (not the "B" version) and the amp seems to work OK. Just got it going last night, but it seems to have plenty of power and at first listen it sounds good.
However, the filter inductors get fairly warm, as does the chip at idle, which I didn't expect. I used the JW Miller 2200 series inductor, and it actually gets warm enough to be uncomfortable to touch and to give off an odor. The chip warms up at "idle" but with a small heatsink it isn't too bad. Anybody got a recommendation for an inductor that won't get as warm?
If there is interest, I'll post the schematic and PCB files later--I'm on travel right now and can't post the files (earliest will be late Monday).
Digikey has the part in stock. There are a lot of SMD parts on the board, as you might expect, but I didn't think it was that hard to assemble. The smallest parts are 0805's, but if you have a fine-tipped iron, magnifying glasses and enough beer you can assemble the board.
