Phase Technology PC 6.5 worth re-woofer-ing?

So, I recently came into a "free" hi-fi system and the speakers that came along with everything are a pair of Phase Technology PC 6.5s. The tweeters and mid's look to be fine, the woofers however, definitely need to be re-foamed. Unfortunately, due to their unique cone design I have to replace the entire driver. They're $85 a piece which doesn't seem that bad, but I would still like to see if the $170 would be better to just put towards a completely new set of speakers.

Any insight would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance

My two cents, others may totally disagree. Driver technology has progressed quite a bit and even PT's, being well respected, cabinets were budget based. When a mid-line speaker is old enough to rot the foam, time to me on.

Another idea is to delve into DIY speaker design and not just replace the woofer, but to use this as your starting point to select a new woofer that is appropriate to the box size and tweak the crossover. Learn to measure the drivers and see how they designed their crossover. It could be a fun learning experience. It is a lot of work so decide is you are really as sick as the rest of us. 🙂

I think replacing old speakers with new is a pretty logical idea. I do, however, think they may be worth replacing. I have a pair of Phase PC60's and I am going to replace their driver since I have the option. It costs $1200 online to buy a pair those speakers on ebay, and they really sound better than my harmon kardon bluetooth speaker. I also have that craving for perfect sound with my records and the PC60's sound epic. I was really lucky to get these speakers in the first place, basically from a dying from cancer rich old man that I did some work for gave them to me! Sentimental!
