Phase Research Loudspeaker - Polydax/Audax inside; which currently Brand Name ?

The US brand name "Phase Research" exist in the late 70th years (arround 1976-1979 - I think). In this aera I buy this two way loudspeaker and I have it still in use because its very good sound quality in the television room.
Inside are transducers from the brand Polydax/Audax - see the attached photos.

A very special future was a accessories suitcase for the bass transducer recone kit and other stuff
The carrier plate of the dome tweeter must cut with a small saw so that it could be mounted as close as possible to the upper corner (looks like last cuttet picture).

The bass was front mounted with a spacer ring and the tweeter from behind the baffle.
Therefore the delay error was compensated and thus the brand name - so I think.

Who knows more about the currently brand name
(if I recall right, "Phase Research" was overtaken from an other manufacturer) ?

The tweeter is still available (model No now TW034 instead "HD 13 D 34 H"), also recone kits therefore.
But the bass transducer I don't find in the currently Audax range.

On the web I don't find informations about this brand name.

I bought this speaker Easter 1979 together with Denon's receiver "GR555" go to

and Denon's record player DP2000 - go to

This was my first set-up of high quality home audio. This Phase Research speakers are in good condition and I have it still in use (without muddy foam surround) in the television room, now fitted from a "D1" Receiver from German brand "Kücke" (KS electronic Wuppertal).

Obviously ths brand was unknown, even in the U.S.
In the meantime I have found this from the web:

I am looking for a pair new dust cover (foam covering) for this loudspeaker.
There are a wide range of such materials available, but how can I find out, what is the best suited for this application?
Maybe this?

Also I'm looking for material for sound insulation on the baffle, which also consists of a kind of foam.

The foam attached to the front baffle was very close to headliner material. Glued in place with contact cement and later peel and stick.

If you are talking about the foam front grill they were a very special foam that I have never seen the like of. Most people played the speaker without them. It will need to be a very large open cell foam and was approximately 1/12" thick.

Attached are some of the marketing documents, the original "instructions" as well as the specific sheet for the Phase R. The blurry page is actually a printing misregistration on their flyer (not a scanning issue).

I had conversations with several speaker suppliers and sent them some images of the woofers. It is suspect that the 8" woofer was made by Gefco, a now defunct company based out of illinois. I'm currently trying different woofers to try and find a good match. 1 of the two original woofers is beyond repair. The other seems to play quite nicely with a new surround on it. Not much I can do with 1 woofer however.

Here is all the technical info I collected when I purchased the model R.

During my search for a replacement woofer, it is suspect the original driver in the Phase R was made by Gefco, unfortunately they are long since out of business. They used to be based out of IL.

I've tried several woofers, a Goldwood from SimplySpeakers.com. Decent and punchy, loads of bass, but perhaps a bit over top in mid range. I'm currently running some Silverflute woofers from Madisound, definitely more reserved in the midrange. Am experimenting with toning down the Polydax tweeter to match it.

30 some years ago I briefly had the RT and also a smaller set which wish had kept which used a sizable ribbon tweeter- IIRC the latter had a thicker overall voicing - I remember RT's woofer suspension feeling "stiff" which perhaps helped below cutoff - maybe a pleated cloth surround too (?) Did Phase Research use a pleated surround woofer in some of their models? I ran mine with a Stasis II

"this" pair on Ebay has butyl surrounds http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/U4sAAOSwJQdW~uPb/s-l1600.jpg

FWIW, can you measure the parameters on your good woofer?

No, can't say I have made any attempt to make measurements. Would take quite a bit of effort to come up with useful data. This link certainly provides a good set of guidelines - Measuring Loudspeaker Driver Parameters

I went off anecdotal information - I noted that the model R original Gefco woofer had a fairly compliant suspension, so compliant it was suspect to be suitable for a sealed enclosure rather than ported, but it certainly works well in the transmission line design of the model R (and RT?). Being such a short lived company there is very limited information out there.

Since I'm using these as a stand in for another set of 2 way speakers I use for studio mixdown work, they are going to be reaching the plateau of how much energy and time I will invest in them.

I "like" these speakers, but they may eventually be relegated back to the garage once I move forward with a 2 way scanspeak based project. Looking forward to speaker "love".

Maybe it is polyester foam like this
Mercury Bass 300 | Bass Trap | Universal Acoustics
Sonderanfertigung Schaumstoff
But I am not sure.
What happen to Phase Research?
It would be interesting to know where this manufacturer ordered it.
Maybe the brand of this very large open cell foam is still present anywhere.

I suffer from bad typing it should read 1 1/2" thick. I will look to see if I can find something like it.

I am going to refurbish a set that I grabbed on ebay 10 years ago. Ordered the tweeters from Madisound tonight.

I have known Phil Clements since before his Phase Research days, although I haven't spoken with him in ten years or so. Before Phase Research, he designed Klipsch-type (Klipsch-inspired?) loudspeakers with horn loaded mid and HF drivers for a company called Beta Sound. His current endeavor is in architectural audio products (in-wall, ceiling speakers and such).

I owned and loved a pair of Phase-Rs in my youth. Wish I had never sold them. I emailed Phil Clements many years ago with a question about the bass alignment and found him very responsive and generous. The latest incarnation of his bass system is called h-pas. I don't have current contact information but perhaps Atlantic Technology does?

I purchased a pair of Phase R's in the late 70's for my college dorm room. They moved with me to an apartment- 1st house- then garage of our current house. The speaker foam has gone bad + the foam under the grill covers had fallen apart. I always had planned to restore them- but that ain't going to happen. I'll be glad to give them to anyone that will pay for shipping from zip 22601.

good information - thank you therefore.
A good match for the tw034 is the JA-8008 made by Seas for Troels Gravesen.

It may work well in those cabinets?
The genuine audax versions are now available, again - go to
Proraum Vertriebs-GmbH | Shop | Tweeter | AUDAX TW034XP-D New!
and
Proraum Vertriebs-GmbH | Shop[shop_articles][action]=details&index[shop_articles][category==3&index[shop_articles][data][shop_articles_id]=31 (German language)
But it is important to use the face plate from the old tweeter so as not to have to do any rescoring especially for this model (i. e. the precise cutting of the curves for mounting the tweeter close to the top corner).

Are there user's, who have perform a re-design of the crossover network ?]%[/category]
