Lightening from the tree?

No, Pete usually hated amplified music, preferring pure acoustic.

There is a famous incident when he had a fit and scolded Bob Dylan when Dylan went electric at a folk festival.

BTW, Pete lived basically just across the Hudson river from me and his neighbors all say that he was always just a friendly, down to earth guy.
In fact, some knew him for a long time whout even knowing he was famous.

Pete Seeger, Dead At 94, And The Real Story Behind His Electric Feud With Bob Dylan - Forbes

fwiw, we had a 1984 Olds "Custom Cruiser" wagon with a cassette player and on the trips back and forth from NY to OH would play Pete Seeger for the small-fry, and wifey snoozin' in the back. Eight hour trips on I80 or I90 as the fates demanded when travelling with little kids.

I think we should all sing "On Top of Old Smokie" and "Abiyoyo" next Thanksgiving along with a complete rendition of "Alice's Restaurant" for Arlo.

Sad, but an entire generation does not even know what Arlo was singing about. Those of us with two digit numbers sure did!

So I will continue to sing along with all of my Weavers records. I grew up on them and see no reason to change.

"This land is our land"

Seeger later found out he was wrong about Joe:

I'm singing about old Joe, cruel Joe
He ruled with an iron hand
He put an end to the dreams
Of so many in every land
He had a chance to make
A brand new start for the human race
Instead he set it back
Right in the same nasty place
I got the Big Joe Blues
(Keep your mouth shut or you will die fast)
I got the Big Joe Blues
(Do this job, no questions asked)
I got the Big Joe Blues .

50 years too late.

Also said of Seeger:

"'If I Had A Hammer'? Well, what's stopping you? Go to the hardware store; they're about a buck-ninety, tops."

In my youth I was a struggling musician and one thing that always knawed at me was how much of the cover music just seemed vacant of real meaning and worthwhile messages worth singing. Pete was a hero, an icon, of someone who could be themself and really communicate something that had power in it. I still hold that music close to my heart and am grateful for every minute spent listening to Pete do it his way come what may.
