Pet pieves...poorly conceived shorthand and improper acronyms that drive you crazy.

I`ll start with my all time fave...

Transformer.. xfmr or xfmer for short. Fine.

Tranny? I`ve myself never seen one in audio use. They usually require tranny fluid and come with a gearshift.

and Trafo. WTF is a trafo? ....oh, that`s fo eating while watching television. 😀

Trafo is a European thing - I think mainly German, possibly also of Dutch origing. Means transformer of course.

I've also seen people use tranny for what seemed to be a transistor - all very confusing.

Yes, German. Tranny for transistor is British, but I've never heard anyone abbreviate SY's word to tranny.

Well, here where I live tranny stands for transvestite. Calling a transitor (or transformer) a tranny is a sure sign of lacking real-life education 😀

I just hate redundant acronyms, ATM machine, for instance.

Things that irritate me is for instance when they say: Your IC's are shipping. Its the company that ships, NOT the IC! Or in announcement of new products: XYZ is now sampling. It isn't sampling (unless it is a sampling amplifier 😉 but it is the company that provides samples. But I guess the microseconds saved by this mutilation of language are critical in today's world...

That's probably why I like Holland so much- it's just like San Francisco.

To avoid irritating EC8010 ("'He's only grumpy when he's awake"), I have fixed the spelling of the thread title.
