That was FAST for a custom order!

Good to hear they look the "business". 🙂

No need to rush anything - think Jamaican Mon 😎

Yep pretty quick, so hats off to Bluearan.

It wasn't a custom order though, just something they don't keep in stock and had to get from their supplier.

I hate to be superficial but the driver cone lends an air of cheapness to the whole thing, even worse than the ATC's and that's saying something.

I was concerned with airspeed of the 3 inch port so I did some analysis.

(without considering room-gain or air-load and turbulance alteration of the straws)

again: 1 driver 1 enclosure 1 port (nominally 84.5 at 20 Hz)

64 watts before *normal* audible behaviour from port in a free-air space with a normal port.

This is an additonal 18db of gain. 18 + 84.5 = 102.5 (..again without considering small losses and the increase provided by room-gain.)

Thats not to bad..

When you consider various losses and gains - I'd expect the average in room response to be well over 105 db at 20 Hz with 64 watts before the port becomes audible (..again without considering the use of straws or the additional airload of the platform/cabinet airspace).

That should be enough for even HT.

For most music listening (excepting vinal "warp") that will be FAR more than enough.

I'm not concerned anymore. 😉

I've been in the shed over the weekend building Troel's Ellam bookshelf speaker for fun as I have the D2904-98 left over from some swapping experimenting on the Perceives, I also need some compact rear speakers and these seemed to fit the bill.

Perhaps the biggest incentive though was some nice Vavona Burl that I've had laying around for the best part of year. I was originally going to use this on the Perceives but decided against it. What a mistake that was! This stuff is absolutely beautiful once some clearcoat is applied, very 3 dimensional and there's a shimmer effect that follows the grain contours as the light changes angles. This looks 10 times better than the black/silver gloss finish I've got on the Perceives 🙁

I've not applied it to the cabinets yet but curiosity got the better of me so applied a few layers of clearcoat and was amazed at the results. Check out these photo's and notice just how much depth is brought out from the clearcoat over the area's without:

I don't think it would really suit the Perceives, I feel that a solid and unfussy colour scheme benefits my original intent. But boy does that veneer look good.

Silver and Black is better, that thing looks like Mars.:xeye:

Agreed, I don't think it would have worked on the mains. But it does have a wow factor all of its own. As always camera shots don't tell the full story, in person the whole thing shimmers and moves with the light and kinda remind me of fractals. Certainly unique.

Well, I managed to blow up a LM4780 GC whilst running it in. The poor thing didn't stand a chance, even with a big domestic fan firing directly on the heatsinks. :devilr:

I've got Wednesday off, so I'll do some more measuring then.

Did you see this thread? Those things can certainly shift some air!

 :worship:

Just how much welly are you giving it! I have absolutely no doubt that the driver is OK though, even with DC on the output because have you seen the VC wire 😀

Missed that thread unfortunately, that SW measurement looks a bit coloured 😉

I'll be interested to hear what you think of it all once things start to gather momentum. I've never actually had the driver running in a box so all the more reason for a detailed report. Are you still going sealed with LT or have things changed?

nice veneer!

it would be likely be overwhelming with the perceives considering their angular look (..which is both "futuristic" and complex)

On the other hand.. a "sem-polished" titanium finish might work in some context with that veneer with the perceive esthetic..

Notice the Caliburn turntable and stand at the Munich show (click on the pic with the weird speaker to the right.. the turntable is on page 5):

Notice that there are two speakers that sport the black & Silver look (I like both). (..page 3 and page 7.. though there were others as well.) I particularly liked the german'esqe version of the sonus faber amati (i.e. the Eventus Audio's Nebula on page 7).. The horizontal grooves in the silver just look cool offset by the piano black baffle..
