haha was only watching thunderbirds this morning, theyre re-running it again at about 10am on bbc2 . . . ahh, the joys of being unemployed 😀
Looks good tho shin, nice and overcomplicated- looks like something id come up with 🙂
why use 6 sides when 18 will do? 😎

Thanks Alex.
The shape is pretty much as is. There's a layer of 9mm MDF to attach to the top section but after that they'll be done aside from some finishing touches done with router.
I'm going to test it without the base and see what its like. I'll then build a couple of bases to check the effects of firing onto base vs. firing out through a large cross-section tunnel.

More detail and some slick paint would put them right up there with the Perceives.
I think Scott is right by saying the more you restrict the airflow, the lower the port tuning will be.

Thanks Matt.
With every project you've got to try something new right? Even something as boring as a sub.

Yeah I'm hoping for some extra gain rather than chaging the port tuning. Will see what happens anyway, right now I'm just looking forward to giving it a go. I probably should have built a prototype first but these have come together so quickly that its no sweat if it isn't up to the task. I'd have been gutted if I spent 3 months building like I did with the Perceive 2's. 😉 And if its good I'll spray it and build the second one.
Did you get a chance to mount the subwoofer and listen yet?
I am looking forward to your impressions of this design!!

Hi Tyler,
I finished this yesterday but haven't been able to get any pics as the bats are dead in the camera. Will take some this late this evening.
Can't try it out just yet as I need to source a decent port from one of the local plumbing merchants, ideally looking for something with a thick wall, this will mean a tube that's rated to silly pressure levels.
Alternatively just use normal pipe and stick ribs down the length of the outside of it to add rigidity and damping. As frequency is low I don't think the tube resonance will be an issue anyway.
I hope not to add more anxiety to your design but your impressions are going to be the highlight of my week! : )
I am excited to hear if this design cured your bug for quick and solid bass.

Et voila:
Finished and ready to run. Weekend will be when this happens hopefully.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Oh and this has gotta be a personal record - one week from start to finish on the woodworking 🙂
Very impressive, I wish I was this good at woodworking 🙂. I like speaker building, but I hate the woodworking part.
I love the woodworking part. It's the finishing part that stumps me. Shin has mastered both for our viewing pleasure thankfully 😉

😀
This weighs around the same as one of the Perceives with drivers mounted - so around 60kg. Lets see what happens 😱 😀

Your too kind

Virtually all the wood was already cut to size by my local timberyard. So this was really more like a Lego kit. I've hardly done anything on this project - a chap called Scott designed the sub, some fella called Ray cut the wood and I glued it together 😀

Yep, its all good fun as far as I'm concerned. Even the bits where stuff goes horribly wrong 😉

Now, don't be so modest 😉
Great job!!
